In 2018, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) changed the definition of the gemstone diamond from:
“A diamond is a natural mineral of crystallized pure carbon”
to:
“A diamond is a mineral of crystallized pure carbon of natural or laboratory origin.”
These changes recognize the identity of composition and quality, as well as the authenticity of both natural and organically grown diamonds, giving buyers more options to make an informed choice.
